There comes a time in every relationship when you feel as though the weight of the world has suddenly come upon you. When you have a million questions but no answers. When everything you once cherished that brought intense joy and happiness seems to have become the primary source of your distress, pain and sorrow. When you feel a dozen arrows in your heart and its searing pain that intensifies every minute. When you just don’t understand, you don’t just know anymore, and you just aren’t sure of anything anymore. When you look in the mirror and you barely recognize the person you see. When your life seems to move in several different directions, but your heart and love are standing still.
Make no mistake about this…everything passes, everything evolves, everything flows. Nothing stands still or endures but change. Change alone is unchanging and change can be very painful and unpleasant.
Think about this scientific fact… every second, billions of cells in your body go through complex regeneration, old cells die, and new cells are born. Your body undergoes complex subtle changes every minute, but you just don’t notice it for a period of time. Imagine having the same name but not being the same person.
As surely as the river’s water is constantly moving, something about you is constantly NEW at any given point. You are not quite the same person you were from the moment you started reading this. Such is the stack reality and beauty of life.
See, there is the new wineskin and an old wineskin. No one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the wineskins will be ruined. Everything under the sun has its life span or “time to live”. Even your body has innate adaption mechanisms to the changes in its internal environment. When your body detects infection, it ramps up its production of antibodies to fight the infection. When your body senses extreme cold, heat or altitude, it adjusts accordingly to compensate for the changes.
Having the wisdom and tenacity to FLEX IS THE KEY and of vital necessity. RIGIDITY is the antithesis of AGILITY. Rigidity in this context is counterproductive, unhelpful and wrong. Maybe you have reached that point in your relationship, personal life or endeavor where the skills that got you thus far, ARE NOT the skills you need to get you to your next level of success. At times like this, abandonment and giving up seem rational, but that’s not the answer. What you need is a new compensation mechanism to adapt or adjust to the changes you are confronting in your unique situation and environment. The right things to do are to embrace change, unlearn the things that have gotten you to where you are now, and embrace new things that you are probably resistant or averse to, but are necessary to elevate you to your next level of success in your relationship, personal life, career or endeavor.
My marriage and family are very important to me. The woman I married eighteen years ago is not the same person I am married to today. We both have evolved and changed millions of times over the years. What we do is intentionally fall in love anew with the new version of ourselves every morning.
We constantly change and adapt to keep our relationship intact, strong and refreshed. And there isn't one change we have undergone that was a cake walk. We have learned to give priority attention to things in my lives that really deserve it. And interestingly, every change has made us a much happier and better than we used to be. Change therefore, is a beautiful thing. Embrace it wholeheartedly, don’t resist it, otherwise you will falter.
Maybe you are at that point in life where your career needs an overhaul. Have the courage to reimagine and reinvent yourself. Commit and invest in yourself. Learn something new.
